Individual Spirituality

In counselling sessions it is not uncommon for some clients to talk about spirituality and/or religious affiliation, i.e. spiritual experiences and/or a set of beliefs concerning the cause and purpose of the universe. Counselling provides the opportunity within a respectful and non-judgemental atmosphere for clients to introduce conversations about spirituality. From a stance of curiosity, the clinician frequently will ask about the beliefs that have particular meaning for you and listen to any questions you may bring regarding spirituality. Sometimes questions such as “Why we here?” or “How do I live according to my spiritual beliefs in the face of life’s challenges?” may arise. Where a particular concern about spirituality is beyond the scope or knowledge of what counselling can provide, you will be referred to speak to someone with such knowledge such as your Priest, Minister, Rabbi, or Imam…

Conversations about spirituality often highlight the impact and influence spirituality has, and how it changes lives. In counselling you and the clinician can work towards recognizing how your identified values and beliefs can be of strength to you during challenging times. When the desire to find meaning and purpose in life is expressed, counselling can help you to identify and reflect on what is most important to you as part of creating a meaningful and purposeful life.
