Marriage and Relationship Counselling and Therapy

The couple relationship can be addressed both in individual and couples counselling. New relationships or decades-long marriages can have a place and purpose in a counselling session. Counselling can be beneficial in strengthening the couple’s relationship, especially when the couple is experiencing distance and disconnection, or intensity and blame. Healing and moving forward after an affair or previous trauma or abuse are also frequently addressed. In addition, intimacy issues sometimes get in the way of a fulfilling relationship, with counselling offering a safe space to discuss this area. Increasing awareness is key to understanding what is going on for a couple. Whether exploring earlier childhood experiences or identifying unhelpful and even detrimental patterns, this work can help the couple recognize what is going on for them and the underlying issues that may need to be addressed.

Developing coping skills, nurturing communication skills and building trust are some of the common goals that are addressed in counselling. The clinician works with the couple to identify strategies that strengthen the relationship, ultimately using the couple’s strengths, resources and resiliency to help bring about change.
